Turquoise forms in aluminum-rich igneous and sedimentary rocks that have been altered, often by surface water. The name Turquoise comes from a french word pierre turquin which means dark-blue stone. Turquoise is a valuable mineral and is possibly the most valuable, non-transparent mineral in the jewelry trade. It has been mined since at least 6000 BC. by early Egyptians.
